Bevy game jam release

Here’s a mini project I’ve been working on over the last week or so. Combine Harvester, developed for the Bevy game jam #2.

It’s the first time I ever used bevy, or indeed Rust. Unsurprisingly I found myself a little stuck at various times, but I’m happy with how it’s gone and can definitely imagine using bevy again in future.

The jam theme was “combine”, and being a massive nerd I obviously had to put a combine harvester at the centre, but also wanted to interpret it as a verb (as I’m sure was the intention). A little thought and I hit upon my concept: combine harvesters often work with a truck or tractor that can ferry the harvest away faster. What if you had to combine roles and drive both vehicles at once?

I’m pleased with what I’ve produced before the jam deadline. The whole basic concept is implemented and after testing, I’ve genuinely had some fun with it. Obviously this is no 1000-hour epic, but as a time-limited project aiming to be a diversion for a few minutes, I’m really happy with how it’s turned out.

I am a little disappointed that the truck is still just a red cube. I hoped to make a truck model of my own, but ran out of time. I’ll come back at some point after the jam and add one. I also have some ideas for extending the game (think obstacles in the field, multiple fields, multiple drop-off points, etc.)
